Nitrogen vessels to be used as storage vessels and transport vessels


Cryotherm develops, manufactures and sells liquid nitrogen vessels for use in industry, biology, medicine, foodstuffs, space travel and research.

Liquid nitrogen vessels are cryovessels and are designed for storing or transporting liquid nitrogen, i.e. cryogenically liquefied nitrogen. Cryovessels are also called dewars. Cryovessels are vacuum super-insulated vessels, i.e. vessels with superinsulation for the storage and the transport of cryogenically liquefied gases such as nitrogen or argon.

Customized manufacturing of cryovessels for the use of liquid oxygen is also possible.

  • APOLLO is the name of our liquid nitrogen vessels for the storage of liquid nitrogen.

  • SATURN is the name of our nitrogen vessels that can also be used for the transport of cryogenically liquefied nitrogen on the public road network.

  • STELLA is the name of our small nitrogen vessels, i.e. dewars, intended for use in laboratories or cryobanks.

  • LAB is the name of our handy and lightweight nitrogen vessels made from aluminium that are designed for use in laboratories.

Our level measurement and control device CRYO LC is used for automation and control engineering. The device either automatically controls the level of liquid nitrogen in a liquid nitrogen vessel or else it can measure and report 4 nitrogen levels.

Here are some examples of procedures where nitrogen vessels are used for storing and transporting liquid nitrogen: Cold shrinking or cold shrink fitting, cryogenic deburring, pipe freezing, freeze drying, cryopreservation, stem cell storage, umbilical cord blood storage, human sperm storage, cryotherapy, cryosurgery, in vitro fertilization, IVF, nitrogen supply of cryobanks

The APOLLO® vessel is a vacuum super-insulated pressure vessel made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel designed for storing cryogenic liquid nitrogen in accordance with European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC, category I module A and bearing the CE marking.

Main components of the APOLLO nitrogen vessel:

  • Coaxial arrangement of the pressure vessel in the outer vessel with neck suspension and vacuum super-insulation

  • Pressure build-up construction in the vacuum area

  • Chassis

  • Safety valve

  • Manometer

  • Dismountable siphon type EK (transfer siphon small flange connection)

Transporting the cryovessel

  • Observe safety notes

  • Keep upright

  • Lift and set down carefully

  • Avoid impacts and strong shocks

Only transport a filled cryovessel

  • When in excellent condition

  • When in unpressurized condition with loosely fitted transport plug

  • With dismounted EK siphon

  • When 2 persons are available for transporting it over inclines, pitches and steps

Installation of the nitrogen vessel

  • Observe safety notes

  • Ensure good ventilation

  • Consider place of operation

  • Fix swivel castors by means of the locking levers

Maintenance / repair of the nitrogen vessel

  • During normal use, the vessel does not require any special maintenance or care.

  • It is advisable to check the function and sealing of the fittings and screw connections at regular intervals.

  • Safety valves must be checked for correct function and set pressure every 2 years. The manometer indicates the set pressure.

  • Vacuum work may only be carried out on the manufacturer’s premises.

  • Observe instructions regarding handling, inspection and assembly of the safety valves.

  • Only use spare parts in accordance with (accessories / spare parts).

  • Repair and maintenance work must only be carried out by specialised personnel.
